From the beach to the caves

After breakfast we check out of the hotel and navigate out the narrow crowded streets once again. We are headed to the hotel’s beach club - but we are inland - so it’s a 45 minute drive to the beach.

As an aside - I hate the beach…well actually I hate the sand, The hotel was supposed to put totes and towels in our car, but once we arrived at the beach, we found there were no towels…either packed in our car or available at the beach. So now I get to collect sand and take it along with me to our next stop,

We leave the beach and head for our last stop before our return to Rome. Matera - the UNESCO site of caverns and hotels.

The hotel we are staying in is in a part of the city where no cars are allowed. So we park outside of the city and contact the hotel for a shuttle pick up. As we travel down very windy narrow roads, I am very happy we can’t drive this.

We walk till we find a dinner place. Nothing fancy here - but we were hungry and it all hit the spot.

This is a town of many steps…many, many steps.

After all the white villages, this is definitely a brown village. Our hotel is at the bottom of the city of caves. The front desk said just keep walking up any set of stairs and you will eventually start walking down the other side. These stairs can be very uneven, and handrails are almost non existent-I think I will tackle thru the small roadway that goes around, rather than up and over.
